My, oh my, it's been a long time since I've posted....probably because life has been so rich and full I've really not taken the time.........so, here's my best shot at that (mostly in pictorial form). Since November when I last posted Ric had his left knee replaced, Thanksgiving (with a great bacce ball tournament), Christmas, Daniel got a new puppy, Lucy, New Year's Day, a visit from Rachel, a visit from the Olshefski's, Daniel's birthday, the baby of 11 turned 50, Valentine's Day, a trip (mini vacation) to Wickenburg with the Ondashes and friends Matt & Cindy Vandiver, Rachel's birthday, my mother, a WASP, receives the Congressional Gold Medal, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Gabrielle's 2nd birthday, all four kids had changes in their jobs in one form or another, 4th of July, & another suprise visit from Rachel! Like I said, a rich and full 8 months...........in a nutshell!!! Here are a few pictures from Thanksgiving. The rest of the pictures will follow in the next posting. Enjoy!

Last night we went out to Thomas and Lindsay's to "watch" Gabrielle trick-or-treat for the first time. She dressed up as a bumble bee complete with her flower pail because bees LOVE flowers much more than they do pumpkins! Of course, she was just adorable - the absolutely perfect costume for her. What really made the costume SOOOOOOO special is that Lindsay's mother, Kathy, made this costume for Lindsay in 1982 for Lindsay to wear for her first trick-or-treating adventure! Thanks Kathy......thanks Thomas and Lindsay! Truly makes the memories special! Enjoy the pictures!

Yesterday 9 out of my 10 sibs (brother Larry was with us in spirit and brother Charles was not able to make in from St. Louis - we missed you both) gathered to honor my oldest brother, David, as he was inducted (along with 18 others from around the state) into the Arizona Veteran's Hall of Fame. We were just so proud of him and honored to be with him/part of this very special moment in his life. Below are just a few pictures and a video of the actual induction.

It's Pumpkin Time & It's Party Time

This last weekend was spent going to a Halloween party and picking pumpkins with Thomas, Lindsay & Gabrielle. Saturday night our good friends Matt & Cindy held their 3rd annual Halloween/costume party. We had an absolute blast. Ric went as Caeser and Daniel went as Ric/Dad. I was a Roman Goddess! There was quite the group of characters that showed. We played Rat toss (aka Corn Hole) and mummy wrap complete with prizes for the best team as well as a prize for the best costume! The catered food was fabulous, spirits were high (both kinds), and fun was had by all!

Sunday afternoon we met up with Thomas, Lindsay and Gabrielle (as well as some of Lindsay's family) at Mother Nature's Farm. Every year they put on a "festival" for the entire month of October. It's a great place for families of young children to go and have some Fall fun! I love the way they post their admission prices. It reads: Children $7, Adults that want to tag along $3. Wonderfully, the $7 also includes a pumpkin and all the fun foam stickers you want to decorate the pumpkin of your choice. All of us, kids/parents/& grandparents, had a great time. They really have it down to a science - just enough "stuff" to do (very hands on) and all geared for little ones. Just look at what we did!

Gosh it's almost October!!!

Wow, it's almost October. The weather SEEMS to be working its way towards the most beautiful time of year here - the Fall & Winter. Over the Labor Day weekend the entire family got together and we did a photo shoot. Needed to get that picture taken for the Christmas card before Rachel left for New York. Anyway, I just got them back and was so thrilled with how many really good pictures we got, I thought I would share just a sampling of them. You will have to wait to see the actual picture I chose for the Christmas card - which, by the way, is DONE and ready for the mail - go ahead hate me.....I told you I was going to get organized for this Christmas and I must say I am well on the way! As you will see, my niece Katie was here for the long weekend visiting and was able to join us for the photo shoot. Man, these kids are just so photogenic. We were equally thrilled that Ric's mother, Anna, was able to be there. It was a blessing to be able to get pictures of all four generations. There were so many good ones I will post a few each time so as to keep you in suspense - tehehe!!! We were thrilled to have her and I know the kids were equally happy to get pictures with their grandmother and favorite/closest cousin........sometimes I forget she's the cousin and not a sibling!!!

Yesterday was Ric's 57th birthday........I have to confess.........I made it a point to tell Ric that 57 is getting pretty close to 60! I'm not sure how he feels about that but he seems to be OK with the 57 thing. We went to a quiet dinner with one other couple. Wonderfully, Daniel was also able to join us. Thomas and Rachel both called their dad and it made Ric all warm and fuzzy inside that they took the time to call him. Wow, how blessed we are to have such great kids!

She's off to the Big Apple

Well, she's made it............Rachel has landed safely in the Big Apple and to her new home in Brooklyn, New York and ready to begin the next phase of her new adventure. Just another check on her "list" of things to do before..............she moves on to the next item (whatever that may be)!!! Congratulations my daughter............we are so proud of you! It's not often you hear of young adults dreaming any more, let alone actually working hard and doing whatever it takes to make those dreams come true. What an inspiration you are to not only other young adults, but to us. Patience, steady plodding and hard work are a rare commodity these days and you are a light to those who are lost! I would, though, be in deep denial if I didn't admit to just how much I miss you already and are counting the days to December 15.

Ok all you OCD, anal organizers (I would fall into this category)……..as well as though that really NEED organizing but don’t know where to begin………AND everyone in between! Here’s the website for you!!! It’s easy to navigate and follow – could involve a lot of printing though. I think I’m going to try to set it up this weekend and see if it doesn’t inspire me to do the steady plodding route for the holidays and really dig into those few very scary places/closets/drawers, etc in my house that I’ve been broadcasting that I’m going to clean out/get to. I’ve done my own version (not nearly as comprehensive) and I must say that those years have been truly a blessed and enjoyable season…………….

Vacation in St. Louis

Gosh, already the end of August. I thought that, instead of writing all I did while in St. Louis on my vacation, I'd post a pictorial story (with captions, of course) of my week. I must say, though, I don't EVER remember experiencing such beautiful weather in August than I did this week. It really was wonderful! So..........on with the story!

Daniel and I arrived Thursday afternoon just in time for our wonderful hosts, Neil and Barb Finbloom, to swoop us off to a delightful wine tasting at Vineyard Wines in downtown Kirkwood. If anyone is ever in the area, this is really quite a nice little wine store with a wonderful variety of labels. Of course, I was able to find some favorites as well as some new wines that were very good and reasonably priced. I liked this store so much, we found ourselves having made two more trips throughout the week.

Friday, while Daniel met with the bride and groom (he did an AWESOME job on the music for the wedding) Barb and I had a great workout at The J - a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility. That afternoon (through the evening) Daniel and I met with long time friends of mine for a delicious dinner and visiting til late in the night. Don & Jane, Neil and Karen, and Mike....thank you SOOOOOOOO much for taking time out of your busy schedules to get together. It's always so great to connect with you when in town........Neil B: I know you will read this and it's OK that you won't email me.............I'll still love ya anyway (tehehehe)!

Saturday morning I was privileged to witness the Sacrament of Marriage of my niece Anny and her wonderful (now) husband Brian Bierman. Anny is the second daughter of my brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Margaret Lucier - guys thanks so much for the great party!!! It was lovely, relaxing and FUN!!! Congrats Anny and Brian!

That evening, as part of, or should I say, a continuation of the wedding reception, we donned our red and headed downtown to the new home of the Big Red - Cardinals baseball - to cheer on the Cards to ANOTHER victory over the San Diego! It was a beautiful night, great scenery (seats), and just plain FUN!

As you can see by Anny and Brian's wedding cake, they are major soccer players, fans, etc. This cake truly sums up their personalities..........LOVED IT!

Sunday morning found us back at Charles and Margaret's home for a super brunch and a chance to really visit with my side of the family. Above are my two nephews (brothers of the bride) that were both able to make it home for their sister's wedding. Love the uniforms. On the left is Peter, just started his 5 year hitch last October and is stationed in Norfolk, VA. Robert (Bob), on the right was on his 30 day leave from Okinawa and is scheduled to be discharged this November. You guys rock - we're so proud of you!

Monday evening 12 of my high school classmates gathered at the home of Barb (and Neil) Finbloom's for a mini-reunion (36 years). WE HAD A BLAST!!! Thank you - all of you - for taking time out to gather - I'm holding you to your promise of you locals getting together on a more regular basis and staying in touch. Hey, for those who haven't yet done it...........sign up on Facebook......a great networking tool.........emails work too!!! One thing I must say.........we all look FANTABULOUS!!!

Tuesday was a special day for 3 VERY close friends. Mary O. (right), Barb F. (middle), and I got to spend the entire day together just doing "girl" things. I have known Mary since I was 5 years old and Barb since my freshman year in high school. These are two of my dearest friends in the entire world. Thank you so much for spending the day with me. Oh, and thanks Neil for going to lunch with us. We finished our day with a wonderful dinner and a great bottle of wine (well 2 after one got spilled - won't go into details). It is such a blessing in my life to have the privelege to say these two women have been my friends for that long.........not something many people get to say/have!

Wednesday, before leaving for the airport for my return to Mesa, I had the time to visit the old neighborhood. Above, The Wall - nuf said.............many memories, great and small! Thanks Mamo Renard for still having your front door open to all of us that just drop by to visit. You are an amazing women and am so thankful for you!!! LOVE YA BUNCHES!

I took this opportunity to go on a mini photo shoot of the neighborhood I grew up in....Parkview! Here is one of the entrances - the one to my street - McPherson. Hey Mary, remember hunkering down behind this pillar in the winter, waiting for the bus to St. Joe's in Clayton, just to get out of the freezing cold wind???

This is the street light on the opposite side of the above pillar with the name of my street on it. This subdivision began just after the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.....ya know "Meet Me in St. Louis" movie - Judy Garland - yup - my old stomping grounds!!!

The front porch of my house - the house I grew up in. Incredible stories and memories - just ask any one of my remaining 9 siblings........I'm sure the same story as just as many versions - it's what makes life so interesting!!!

Ahhhhhhhhh.....the stories these walls could tell. Not just of my family, but of all the families that have lived in this house since it was built in 1905! It's every bit as beautiful as I remember it as a child growing up........I must admit, though, I'm every bit as happy NOT to have to clean that thing!!! (tehehe)

A Tribute to Charley!

Marcella "Charley" Fried Lucier

October 9, 1922 - August 10, 1988

This is my mother. 21 years ago today she took her last flight - HOME! Marcella, aka Charley, aka Grandma Charley loved flying. It was her passion from a very early age. She actually flew an airplace before she was legal to drive a car. She gave her father his first airplane ride. He was 63 years old. Pretty amazing for a young woman in 1937. She would ride her bike out to the airfield, wash the planes on the flight line to earn the money to pay for her flying lessons. She was one of only 1023 women that earned her wings as a WASP, Women's Air Service Pilots and was so proud and rightly so. 44 years later, these women finally acquired official veteran status with all its privileges and benefits. I remember her saying that the only thing she wanted for her funeral was the right to have a flag draped on her casket. She achieved that dream/goal. Now, mind you, this sounds remarkable, and indeed, it is. After be decommissioned she went to Colorado University, Bolder, CO and was introduced to (blind date) her soul mate on VE day (May, 1945) and was married at a small side alter in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, NY on January 7, 1946....just 7 months later. They were married for 24 1/2 years (and 11 children later) when he was suddenly taken from her on July 24, 1970. She was only 48 years old. Now, you may think she was quite remarkable, for indeed, she was. She was strong, intellegent, well read, well traveled, cultured in worldly ways, and adventurous....and carried it all with dignity and a grace most only dream to emulate. But, what I see as the most remarkable trait was her capacity to love.....and love deeply and passionately and yet so gently! She loved her husband, her children, her family, her friends, her country.......all the way down to the stranger! I pray daily to possess 1/10 of the level of capacity to love that she seemed to have and share with such ease.

Her legacy speaks volumes in the lives of her 11 children (one of whom shares her eternal happiness with her), 23 grandchildren and now 4, very soon to be 5, great grandchildren!

I love you Mom and miss you dearly! The skies are clear and ready for take off. Oh, btw, Mr. Brown said, "Roger, Charley, your flaps are down!"

It's already August!

Gosh, I hadn't realized just how quickly this summer has flown by....it's already August! Lindsay's school (Queen Creek High School) is already back in full swing and several more school districts are gearing up for the return of their students. Where did the summer go? Ric and I have been quite busy (not too hectic though). We're half way through with a wonderful 10-week Bible study and enjoying it immensly. Ric goes to Alpine for a few days while I'm in St. Louis for niece Anny Lucier's wedding on the 15th. Daniel is doing the music so we are going together, although I am staying in town a few extra days to visit. We are looking forward to the gathering of family for such a special event which I am guaranteed there is some fun thrown in there.

Thomas and Lindsay are busy as usual with work and Gabrielle. We've been very fortunate to have had her on several occasions. She is growing like a weed and still as entertaining as ever. The picture below was a total setup just so that I could get a shot of her with an icecream cone. Can't tell you why just yet - just know that I'm working on a Christmas present for her! Thomas is still enjoying his job with Devry, broadcasting the Mass on TV on the weekends and has been asked back to work on the camera crew for all the home games of the Cardinals. Lindsay, of course, is busy getting back into the swing of school. She has been made the department head and is teaching Marketing and Co-op this year. Everyone in that household is healthy, happy, and flourishing - can't ask for more than that! Daniel has officially flown the coop (again - tehehe) and is now completely moved into his new place (which makes us empty nesters). Wonderfully, it's only about 4 miles from our house and only 2 miles from his office. Of course, he dove right in and got entirely unpacked and "set up" in short order. It looks stunning - he really does have wonderful taste - and is thrilled to see, touch, feel his stuff again. Most of it has been in storage for the last 3 years so he's truly experiencing "Christmas in the summer" and is enjoying reacquainting himself with his "stuff"! And, as always, he's busier than ever at work and still loving it. Rachel is taking a couple of days to visit friends in Flagstaff and one more trip to California to visit the Ondashes and friends before high tailing it to New York next month. YIKES, it's coming so fast. It's crunch time now and she's gearing up for a garage sale, boxing, and general wrapping up before she blows this popsicle stand!!!
Last Friday we were ALL able to gather at one place to celebrate Anna's (Ric's mom) birthday, albeit a couple of weeks late! She turned 77 this year and is still doing pretty well. She's decided to buy herself a computer (first one EVER) and learn to use it just enough to stay in touch with her sisters in El Paso. Thanks to Lindsay, we think we found one that she should be able to use - 23" screen - big enough for her poor eyesight. Anyway, below is a picture of the 4 generations! The moment I took it, I knew I would cherish not only the moment but the picture as well. Boy, can you ever see the family resemblence - certainly a case for the gene pool!

Gosh, I hadn't realized that it has been a few weeks since I've posted anything.....so, to that end, here goes.

Ric and I had a fabulous 4th of July weekend. We actually went camping for the first time in about 12 years. Not only did we have incredible weather, a wonderful time, great food (and wine), fantabulous company, but we realized that we were really proficient at it, even after all these years. Of course, this time we had our queen size air mattress complete with sheets and a down duvet instead of just a couple of camping pads under our sleeping bags. Hey, we're entitled to a few comforts from home. We spent the weekend riding quads (yes, I actually drove one - proof is in the picture), playing MANY games of cornhole (with as many twists to each game), shooing Elsie, a very insistant cow, out of our campsite, taking walks, taking pictures (a sampling of the results below), setting up a quasi shooting gallery, reading, singing around the campfire (thanks to Ric)and even managed to hit a small local arts and craft festival. Truly an enjoyable and relaxing weekend.

Friday, Gabrielle spent the day at Nani Jane's. Uncle Daniel and Aunt Rachel were here to play as well. Uncle Daniel bought a Winnie the Pooh bubble maker (battery operated, of course) for Gabrielle. As you can she, she had a blast. We all had such fun. Probably the biggest change is that she is truly loving walking and makes sure she really gets all her miles in before bedtime.

All in all, this was a fantastic week. We actually were blessed to have ALL the kids in the house at the same time - twice!!!! My heart was so full of joy! Honestly, I think that is my MOST favorite thing IN THE WORLD!!! Love to all this Father's Day!

As you can see, Gabrielle gave her daddy something to remember on Father's Day. Lindsay and Gabrielle went to Mass with Thomas at the cathedral for Father's Day (Thomas does the live broadcase of the Mass in our diocese for the shut ins) and while he was setting up, Lindsay had Gabrielle outside. You can imagine the combination of a baby just learning to walk and LOVING the new found mode of transportation and an uneven sidewalk........YUP, in true Duran style, Gabrielle managed her first royal face plant (I am sure this will NOT be her last!). What you can not see very well in the picture is the "egg" on her forehead. Fortunately, her only cried for about a minute and she was on her way! You can tell by the last picture, she was NOT going to let a little face plant get in her way of Aunt Rachel giving her a ride in the bin that Nani Jane stores her daycare toys. We just call her Gabrielle-in-the-box!!

Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend was a blast. I got a lot of fun projects done - finished making a dress WITH A MATCHING HAT (stinking cute) for Gabrielle, got started on another quilt, and started creating my Christmas cards (don't hate me - I do this every year)! We got to see Gabrielle quite a bit this weekend (even got to spend the night on Sunday night while Mom and Dad had grown up time and date night), which is always a treat. But, I think the most fun was having all the kids and a few of their friends, as well as the other grandparents, over for an impromptu bbq. I suppose the pinnacle of the day was seeing Gabrielle REALLY walking for the first time. What a blessing it was to have all the family their to see it. And now you can too! These are the moments that technology is SOOOOOO wonderful. As usual, I had my camera near by and was able to video the event. Enjoy!

On the rest of the family front, the latest news is that Daniel will be moving August 1st into a beautiful little house. He will be renting and has a great roommate. We're all so happy and excited for him. He's very excited to see his "stuff" after 2+ years in storage. His new place is in Tempe and not very far from here or work. They say location, location, location is everything! He certainly scored in that area. He's also done quite a bit of traveling this year. California, New Orleans, St. Louis and has been really enjoying it. He's started back with teaching private lessons (violin and viola) and enjoys that as well.

The other bit of news is that on September 12 Rachel will be moving to New York. Specifically, working in Times Square and living in Brooklyn. In the usual Rachel style, she's already got a job (with benefits) and an apartment complete with 2 roommates all set and waiting for her arrival. This is one of those love/hate occasions. While, in my heart, I believe she was born to do this and am overflowing with joy and excitement for her, and knowing she will succeed beyond beyond, I (we) will miss her terribly. I've so enjoyed having her in the same city for the last year. It seems we just barely got her nearby (after her being gone for 4 years) and we have to say have a safe trip once again! The upside to this is she has already booked her flight home for Christmas and will be here for a couple of weeks. She's going to sell EVERYTHING (well, just about everything), pack what she can in 3 suitcases and begin her adventure! (Ok, so here's my shameless promotion - she's got quite a bit to sell: car, bedroom set, microwave, really nice desk, 2 couches, a couple of lamps, and probably a bunch of misc stuff - so, if you need/want anything, just let me know. OR, if you know of anyone, again, just let me know! The more she sells, the more $ she has to move with AND the less I have get rid of after she leaves!!!!!

We are all looking forward to Anny's wedding in August and the arrival of the newest grand nephew in September! Congrats to Anny & Brian and Elizabeth and Kevin! I also want to say how excited I am to have another sibling earn their membership card to the grandparent's club. Welcome Chas & Margaret! A little FYI for those who might be interested: Anny & Elizabeth will having their joint/combined bridal/baby shower in St. Louis on Sunday, July 5. It really was the only way/date that both girls to be in St. Louis at the same time. Personally, I think it is a brilliant idea! Anyway, Elizabeth & Kevin are doing the nursery in khakis and greens with monkeys as the theme (how cute is that???) and Anny and Brian are registered at Target and William Sonoma and her colors are platinum and all shades of pink (gorgeous)!!

Daniel and I are for sure flying to St. Louis for the wedding (Daniel is doing the music - so proud of him). Rachel is not sure yet but with her pending move, it's still a little iffy. Anyone else going???

Ric has been extremely busy with work. His latest assignment is going to be a huge one - a brand new (and big) fire station here in the City of Mesa. It will be very challenging and he is really looking forward to it. It should last for several months and is yet another really big feather in his cap. He also has a trip planned in June - back to Cali for 4/5 days - back to the yacht that he so enjoyed last October. He assures me that he will NOT have another "accident" that will require any more surgery. I've been praying - A LOT!!!

As usual, you can see - there's never a dull moment in the Duran household. I don't think I would have it any other way!!! Until next time..................

We were blessed to have Gabrielle the entire weekend. Lindsay was in California at a huge DECCA Conference/convention with 5 of her students and Thomas had to work. A side note: congratulations Lindsay, of the 2 of her students that were on the competition side of the conference one placed in the top 20 and the other placed in the top 8...............and this was out of 1500 kids competing. Awesome job Lindsay (and congrats to your students as well). She was very happy considering she teaches at a relatively small school in the, what a lot of people of consider, obscure little town of Queen Creek, Arizona. Anyway, Gabrielle was her usual busy, happy little girl. But, as you can see, over the last couple of months a theme has developed. She LOVES being UNDER things..........tables, chairs, end tables, her tent. Who needs toys when you can let her play under something. We had a blast with her and are so thankful that Thomas and Lindsay give us these opportunities to spend time with her.

Well........here it is!!! The "girly fort" I made for Gabrielle's 1st birthday! It goes over a cardtable. It was a big hit with all the kids so I'm thrilled to know that she will get several years of fun out of this. I think Mom and Dad were happy as well - they realized just how easy it will be to set up AND put away and store!

Our day was truly wonderful and blessed. We went to Thomas and Lindsay's house for the party. Our hearts were so filled with joy as we witnessed the love for Thomas, Lindsay and Gabrielle through the many, many family and friends that joined in their celebration! Gabrielle had all her aunts, 3 of her cousins from the McCulla side as well as the grandparents and one great grandmother. And from the Duran side, she had Great Aunt Jenny, Great Uncle David, Aunt Rachel, cousins Christina and, of course, Grandpa Ric and Nani Jane. Thanks so much for coming and celebrating! As you can see from the pictures - fun was had by all and Thomas and Lindsay were so welcoming and threw a great party! It is so much fun (and a true blessing) to see your children healthy and happy. It was also a lot of fun going to the party having done minimal work! Enjoy the pictures..........

Easter, 2009

We had a most blessed Triduum and Easter. We started with Holy Thursday Mass celebrating the institution of the priesthood, service, and the Eucharist. Of course, Good Friday next with THE most incredible proclamation of the Passion - completely sung by our music ministers with our own Daniel humbling proclaiming the part of Jesus. It absolutely brought tears to the eyes of many. Then Saturday night we participated in the Easter Vigil - one of my most favorite Masses of the year. Although it's much longer than regular Sunday Mass, it overflows with Sacrament, ritual, and tradition. A total emcompassing of what church is. Again, we're just so proud of Daniel and all the liturgy staff and musicians at our parish. I'm not sure the experience that you are enveloped with can be found anywhere else. How blessed we are to have this kind of community right in our own backyard. Sunday morning my family gathered at my sister Bobbi's home for our traditional Easter brunch. Thanks Bobbi for hosting all these many years. It's always wonderful and I know that Mark and you work very hard. It shows and is greatly appreciated. Love ya bunches. We were especially blessed this year. Jenny is doing so well after her breast cancer surgery that she was there and looking absolutely fantastic. Also, we warmly welcome Emily Kempe into our Catholic faith. Emily was received into the church Saturday night at the Newman Center. Thanks Em for reminding us just how important (and alive) our faith is. It's not what we do - it's who we are! Later that afternoon, the Duran Clan traveled to the McCulla home (Gabrielle's other grandparents - Thomas' in-laws) and joined them for Easter dinner - and what a feast it was. It was especially nice because Daniel was finally done with work and was able to join us as well. So, we had all the "little chicks" gathered in the nest. How I have so come to treasure and cherish these moments. Of course, the McCulla family was most gracious, welcomed us warmly, and stuffed us to the gills. It was great being with them again. It had been a very long time, several surgeries (Rachel, Ric, Dusty, etc.) since we'd been able to get together with them. Thanks for being such good in-laws to Thomas and friends to us. We all got home around 7 p.m.ish and promptly fell into bed. A good, very good weekend all around!

Well, it's finally done - every last detail. Well, except we just today decided on the hardware for the cabinet and drawer pulls so Ric will install them over the next couple of weeks. He's worked SO long and SO hard that he truly deserves time off. Thankfully, the next three weekends are just for "play". Of course, next weekend is Easter, the following weekend is Gabrielle's 1st birthday (where did the time go?) and the following weekend Ric and his small men's faith sharing group is going to take a well deserved long weekend in Alpine. The wives are going to spend the weekend in Prescott - YIPPEE!!! I can only imagine the "stories" that will come from that weekend!!!! I want to publicly acknowledge some very special people who helped us out tremendously (donated their time and talents). I don't think we could have done this enormous project without you. Matt & Cindy Vandiver, Mark & Lila Wiemann, Jim Roe, John Huppenthal, Sheila Adamo, and my wonderful children Daniel and Rachel. Of course, there were also a few "paid" workers I want to acknowledge as well: Matthew Barnhart, Dean Lapa, Bob (the plumber), and Lance Hollyfield. My dear daycare families - thank you for your patience throughout the process - organized mess/kaos and all!

So, this next Saturday night right after the Holy Easter Vigil, we are holding our traditional late night party to celebrate Jesus' resurrection AND to inaugurate the kitchen. It will be our "grand opening" so to speak!

At long last (3 months) we (mostly Ric) has completely renovated our 30 year old kitchen. He has worked non-stop and tirelessly since the middle of January to bring to life our vision of an updated kitchen. Here are some pictures of what it looks like!

Lots of working space and storage space. Notice - no lower cabinets - that's because we put in all deep drawers with full extension hardware - I LOVE IT!!! No more digging to the recesses of the abyss to find a pot, pan, or cookie sheet.

The side bar - Ric was thinking of me. He added an electrical outlet at the side bar so that we would be able to use this shelf top when entertaining for such things as a crockpot, coffe pot (if we needed to move it from the bar so that we had room for the blender at the wine bar)!

Good shot of the new light fixtures - got rid of that old ugly ceiling light and replaced it with these beautiful recessed cans. Also got rid of that ugly light above the sink.

Notice the arches over the sink and walkway to the back room - Ric did an awesome job constructing these to mimic the profile of the upper cabinets.

Gosh, so much has gone on since last I posted. I apologize for my tardiness. Let's see...where to start!

I guess that would have to be the kitchen. My, oh my. So much has been done and Ric has only to finish the tile backsplash. He's promised to have it done by this weekend. I promise to post pictures just as soon as it is finished. Here's what we've done: arched the window over the sink and the doorway between the family room and the back play room to mimick the arches in the cabinetry. Redid all the electrical......new ceiling lighting, new fixtures, new and additional outlets. Stripped one ceiling of that god awful popcorn. Repainted: 3 rooms, (kitchen, family room, and back room) including ceilings, walls, baseboards, window trim, all other trim, door jams, and touched up paint in the living room. Stripped and restained door. Tile work on the floor due to different foot print of cabinets. Hung new microwave above stove. New sink, fixtures and plumbing. All new cabinets AND countertops, including a new wine bar! We started this project in January so our process has lasted just under 3 months and believe it or not, Ric and I still love each other and are still amazed at how well it has gone.

I want to publicly thank Matthew B., Ric's faith sharing group, Cindy and Lila, Sheila, and Lance. All of you played an important role. Daniel: son, you're the best. You've had to live through this. You have been wonderful.

Next on the list: I DROVE (18 hours one way) to McPherson, Kansas with two girlfriends (met up with 10 other women) and spent 5 days in a beautifully restored victorian home and scrapbooked. It was wonderful. Oh, yes, I did stop long enough to get a great massage. All I can say, is that I kicked butt and finished 116 pages. It really was quite relaxing. Thanks go out to all you wonderful women but most especially to Tish for orgainizing the week (you rock) and to my traveling buddies and roomies - Erika and Debbee - what a privilege it was to spend that kind of time with you. Just a note: I did plan the timing of this trip so that I would be GONE when the kitchen was without any cabinets, countertops, or sink!!! Again, Ric and Daniel - you two are awesome. I know how difficult it was to live here for a week without any of that!

Next: My sister, Jenny (the baby of the family) was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a bilateral mastectomy last Friday. Thankfully, she is doing great and the good news is that the tumor was smaller than anticipated, they got very clear margins, AND no lymph nodes are involved. Consequently, and again very thankfully, no radiation or chemo. Jenny is the second sister to have been diagnosed with breast cancer so we were all pretty concerned.

Next: Our darling daughter, Rachel, celebrated another birthday (23rd). It was great having all the kids over for dinner. Ric worked his usual magic in the kitchen and we had a yummy dinner. The next day she flew to New York to visit some friends. I'm sure you see it coming. Yup, I was in Kansas, she was in New York and called me to "talk" about moving to New York. So, as of now, her goal is to be there by the first of September. She already had a job before she left and is being held until she gets there in September. What a go getter. I believe in my heart that this is what she was born to do and be. I've so enjoyed finally having her back in the same town as us so I am going to miss her deeply. I have only Ric and me to blame. We spend our time and energy, and all our love on forming our children to become functional, happy, healthy, confident adults and then when that really happens and they do EXACTLY what they are meant to do....we hate it!!! (tehehe)

Of course, plans for Easter are well under way. Our traditional after Easter Vigil party is set. We're using that as our inauguration of the new kitchen. Then on Easter Sunday, sister Bobbi will again (as tradition has it) host the Easter potluck brunch. We're looking forward to that. We're hoping that Jenny will feel up to making an appearance.

Not to stop there, the following Sunday, April 19th is Gabrielle's 1st birthday. My, how time has just flown by. I've been working on an incredibly cute project and will finish it this weekend. I will post pictures after she her birthday. I want it to be a surprise. Just be it known that there will be approximately 60-75 man hours into it......but sooooooooo worth it! I must say, "IT'S STINKING CUTE!!!"

During this first quarter of the year we also received news that my brother will receive his membership into the grandparents club in September AND that his second daughter will be getting married on August 15th. I'm so excited about both but particularly happy because Anny will be getting married not only on my birthday, but on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. Congrats Charles & Margaret; Elizabeth & Kevin; and Anny & Brian!

My brother Phil's son, Brian, also announced his engagment to Amy Tao. A beautiful young lady from China. Not sure when the wedding will be. That will depend on when she can get her visa and travel to the US. We're all thrilled with our kids. They really shine!!!

I think that's probably ENOUGH!!! (at least for now). Life is never a dull moment at the Duran house so................stay tuned!!!

Lindsay had to go to Tucson for a couple of days for school (work) and Thomas had to work late so we were blessed to have Gabrielle spend a couple of days with us. Uncle Daniel and Aunt Rachel also got to spend quality time with her. What fun we had. She is just so entertaining and such a joy to have around.

She's now 10+ months old and has hit so many milestones. She's now not only crawling but pullin up. Of course, she's quite pleased with herself with her accomplishments. She's completely on table food and off the bottle and loving it! It's hard to imagine that she'll be a year old in a short 6-7 weeks. We're all, once again, marveled at the speed of time!

We got to spend all day yesterday (Valentine's Day) with Gabrielle. Unfortunately, it was because Lindsay was down with this horrible bug that is going around and Thomas had to work. We are grateful we could help. We thoroughly enjoyed having her from breakfast through dinner. She's now 9 months old, pulling up on everything, and has two teeth (working on several more)! We are so in awe of what a wonderful little girl she is and how she makes us laugh......truly living, breathing, pure, and genuine joy! Being grandparents gives us the blessing of experiencing life without the kind of worries you have as a parent with young children. I believe in my heart that that's our payback (ten fold)! How can one not see that as overflowing and abundant blessings!!!

We had a fabulous weekend....

Saturday I had the opportunity to spend some time scrapbooking with a few friends, one of which was visiting from Canada. Boy, was she ever enjoying out beautiful 78 degree weather. She let us know that at that moment it was -52 degrees at home. Once again, I appreciated our winters and reminded myselft NOT to take it for granted.

Saturday night was our highlight. Gabrielle got to spend a few hours with us while Thomas and Lindsay went to a family birthday. As you can see by the videos, she's not only growing like a weed, but is most entertaining. We thoroughly enjoyed her performance on the "drum". She's such a joy to have around.

Sunday, of course, was another BIG day for all of us in Arizona (and even more so for those of us who grew up in St. Louis - we got double enjoyment)! Thomas had the opportunity to work on the camera crew for all of the Cardinals' home games this year. And, Sunday was no exception. He was right there in the endzone by the tunnel where the players come out. He had an awesome time and said the energy just about raised the roof. Will post a picture as soon as I get my hands on one. GO CARDINALS!!! After 21 years here in Arizona, they are GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL!!! No matter whether the Cardinals win OR the Steelers......this town is relishing the joy of getting there!!!

Saturday and Monday Ric worked very hard (and his body is now committing mutiny) on the beginning stages of our kitchen remodel. He's doing an incredibly job and it is going to look gorgeous. We should be completed by the middle of March and will post pictures a little later down the road. So far, our marriage is fully intact and should survive the process (tehehe)!!!

I was "reviewing" all my Christmas pictures (getting them ready to send to Winkflash for printing) and saw this quick video. Thanks Daniel for taking it and sharing it. Uncle Daniel gave Gabrielle this piano for Christmas and really took to it. Not bad for 8 months old!!! At least in Nani Jane's and Uncle Daniel's mind she's a natural!!!

New Year's Eve 2008-09

Last night Ric and I, once again, had a blessed opportunity to spend the evening ringing in the New Year with our most treasured friends. We started our night out by gathering/praying at Mass to celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Always, a grace! After Mass we traveled to the home of Mark and Lila Wiemann to eat, laugh, and, yes, play Guitar Hero and have our own battle of the bands. Actually, if anyone had been a fly on the wall (or one of our children) they would probably describe it as "Parents Gone Wild" or maybe sign us up as a sideshow for a traveling circus. Either way, we had a blast and kicked some ****!!! Thank you so much Mark & Lila Wiemann (for hosting and continuing our tradition), Dave Hubalik, Jim Roe, Wade & Cathy Woodall, and Matt & Cindy Vandiver. We missed you Mark & Teresa Pond, John & Jennifer H., Hal & Claudia Mayer, and Rae Lynne! All of you are such a blessing and gift to us!

Zoo Lights - 2008

As you can see, I've made my first attempt at adding a "gadget" (a slideshow - see show on right) to my blog. I've done this with pictures from our trip to Zoo Lights last night. Because there were so many, it really was better to put them in a slideshow than force you to scroll and scroll and scroll in order to see them all in a larger format. I also think this method takes up less space. I must say that after more than a couple of hours and a phone call to one of my friends that "talked" me into creating this dang blog in the first place, I've seemed to manage to accomplish my goal! Sorry, the pictures are small but think you still get the overall idea of our very enjoyable time together!!! We had the pleasure of having my niece Katie Barnhart and her husband Matthew and son Jordan with us as well as Lindsay's sister, Kristen and her daughter Kyla. We could not have ordered nicer weather for our outing which is very important when you go to see 2.5 MILLION lights. The Phoenix Zoo Lights is truly a spectacular annual event. I'm hoping to make it a annual tradition for our family!

The day after Christmas we had several other family members come into town. I was able to have lunch at Sweet Tomatoes in Tempe with sister-in-law, Laurie and niece, Elaine who were visiting from Sacramento, CA. Also joining us were Bobbi (sister), Phillip (nephew from China), David (brother), Jenny (sister), Spencer (nephew), Erica (niece) and Emily (niece). It was so good to see Laurie and Elaine again. I can't believe how much more grown up Elaine looks, even though I just saw her a short 2 1/2 months ago. She's the youngest of this generation and is truly bring up the rear in style, grace and pure joy!!! She is the reason people say, "They save the best for last!" (tehehe) Don't worry all you other 23 or so nieces and nephews.....I love you just as much and KNOW that you are just as special and unique as Elaine. I must say, though, there is something about that baby................am I right Rachel and Jenny????

Later that afternoon, Katie and Matthew Barnhart and son, Jordan (niece, nephew-in-law, and grand nephew) came in from Oceanside, CA for the New Year!!!

We had an incredible Christmas! Well, we did have one "major" bump/bruise! Ric fell at work and, while protecting his right arm (you know, the one he just had surgery on in October) he landed on his left shoulder. We will hopefully find out today if he tore his rotator cuff in his left shoulder. Otherwise, Christmas was spectacular. Thomas, Lindsay, and Gabrielle dropped by for a visit after the Children's Mass on Christmas Eve. What a bonus. We didn't think we'd see them until Christmas afternoon so we really enjoyed that! Ric, Rachel and I went to Midnight Mass. Daniel was already there (working) and Thomas was broadcasting Midnight Mass from our diocesan cathedral. Midnight Mass at St. Timothy's is always beautiful! Great music, great liturgy! We are so proud of Daniel and his work in liturgy at our parish. He works very hard and does an awesome job. Our parish is sooooooo blessed to have him! Ric and I are even more so blessed to call him son!

Christmas morning was wonderfully relaxing. Ric was extremely sore, so it was wonderful that we could "lounge" around for the morning. Rachel and I prepared an awesome breakfast feast and we all enjoyed sitting down to a traditional Christmas meal. Granted, it was at 2 p.m. in the afternoon but it still felt like breakfast! The weather was overcast, rainy, and cool. It really added to the ambience of the day! After breakfast/lunch, we "did the tree" starting, of course, with the stockings. We all made out like bandits and piled our booty into our respective "piles"! It was sooooooooo much fun having Gabrielle! You know, it IS all about the children!!! As expected, she seemed to like the packaging more than the gifts with the exception of the piano that Uncle Daniel gave her. She "played" her heart out on it and gave us all a concert we won't soon forget! It was then off to my sister, Jenny's, for a traditional gathering of my sibs and their families (as many as could make it) for yet another meal/feast! It was great to see nieces and nephews that had made it in from, literally, around the world. Nephew, Phillip, made it in all the way from China! We look forward to meeting his new bride/wife, Honey, when she makes it here, hopefully, in the Spring. All I can say is, RED TAPE!!! We came home and promptly crashed by 9 p.m.!!!

Welcome to Jane & Co. This is my first (and probably only) attempt at blogging so we'll see how it goes. It will be very ecletic in content.....I think mostly because my life is that way! So here we go! The Duran Clan....Christmas, 2008!!! What a blessing it is to have all of us together for our annual Christmas picture....especially now that we are growing (as you can see). Ric and I are so proud of our children - Thomas and wife, Lindsay; Daniel and Rachel. They have grown into wonderful adults and are truly a visible hope for the future. Ric and I are now grandparents to Princess Gabrielle Marie Duran (now 8 months). We call her that because she has and deserves (as does every child) all the dignity of royalty! Needless to say, we are having an absolute blast with her. Thomas and Lindsay are just THE BEST parents...loving, nuturing, very relaxed and loving every moment. Daniel is the doting uncle and is proud of the fact that he is Gabrielle's ONLY true (blood) uncle. He is doing incredible things as the Liturgy Coordinator and a music minister at church and LOVES his dog, Pepper! Rachel has graduated from NAU with a double major and one minor and is gainfully employed. She continues to grab life by the horns and take it for a ride. We love having her living back in the valley after having been in Flagstaff for four years. We are thankful and blessed that all 4 kids have jobs and that they seemed to be secure. Ric is working hard (very thankful that his job is secure) and recovering well from surgery on his bicep. Me? I love my job of keeping up with all of them!!! My child care business is soon starting its 22nd year! Holy cow....but I still love doing what I do!!!
